A shopper comparing a range needs a different page from someone checking the details of a particular item. Shopify SEO becomes easier to plan when each collection and product page has a clear job.

Start with a small part of your catalog. Decide which searches it should answer, what a buyer needs to know and how they will reach the next relevant page. The aim is a store that helps people choose with confidence.

Match the page to the buying decision

Consider a hypothetical store selling ceramic planters. Someone searching for “indoor ceramic planters” may want to compare sizes, colors and shapes. A collection is a sensible destination. Someone searching for a particular eight inch planter is closer to choosing an item and needs its product page.

Write down the main question each page answers. The collection might answer “Which planter suits my room and plant?” The product page might answer “Will this planter fit, and what exactly is included?”

Check current search results for the phrases you are considering. The types of pages appearing can inform your judgment about what people expect. Treat that as evidence to assess alongside your actual range and customer questions.

Help shoppers compare a collection

A collection introduction should explain what brings the products together and how to choose between them. Keep the useful selection criteria close to the products. Detailed advice can follow the product grid or live in a linked buying guide.

Before: “Discover our beautiful collection of premium planters. We have something for everyone.”

After: “Explore ceramic planters for indoor shelves, desks and windowsills. Compare each planter’s internal dimensions with your nursery pot. Choose a model with a drainage hole and saucer, or a decorative cover pot designed to hold a separate inner pot.”

In this hypothetical range, both types are available. A real store should describe only the options it sells. Check that product cards and filters make those distinctions visible, so the introduction helps someone use the collection.

Give each product enough detail to decide

Product copy should resolve the uncertainties that remain after someone has chosen an item to inspect. For the planter, that includes external and internal dimensions, material, drainage, intended use and whether a saucer is included.

Before: “A stylish planter made with quality materials. Perfect for your home.”

After: “The Alder ceramic planter has an eight inch external diameter and a seven inch internal opening. It includes a matching saucer and a drainage hole. Designed for indoor use. Plant and nursery pot are sold separately.”

These are invented specifications for the example. Verify every detail before using equivalent copy in your store. Place the key facts where shoppers can find them, and make delivery and return information easy to reach. Use customer questions to identify missing details, particularly when similar products differ in ways a photograph cannot explain.

Write specific search titles and descriptions

Use the SEO title to identify the page clearly. For the example, a collection title could be “Indoor Ceramic Planters | Example Store.” The product title could be “Alder Ceramic Planter with Saucer, 8 Inch | Example Store.” Each describes a distinct destination.

A collection meta description could read: “Compare indoor ceramic planters by size, color and drainage style. Check dimensions and find a planter for your shelf, desk or windowsill.”

Shopify’s guidance on SEO titles and descriptions recommends unique, readable wording. It also explains that search engines can display different text from the fields you enter. A preview is not a promise of the final search result.

For a collection, open Products, then Collections, select the collection and edit its Search engine listing. Shopify documents these collection settings. Keep the wording consistent with the visible page and the products currently offered.

Describe what each product image shows

Alt text should communicate the useful visual information in an image. For a front view, “Cream Alder ceramic planter with matching saucer” is more informative than “planter product image.” For a detail photo, “Drainage hole in the base of the Alder planter” describes a different feature.

Shopify’s alt text instructions recommend brief, descriptive wording and explain how to add it to product media. Alt text also supports people using assistive technology. Review each image individually. Avoid repeating a list of search phrases across every photograph or describing features that the image does not show.

Connect useful pages and question duplicate collections

Link important collections from relevant navigation, then make their products reachable through the collection. A planter sizing guide could link to indoor planters. A product page could link to compatible saucers or the wider range when that helps someone choose.

Google’s ecommerce navigation guidance recommends links between categories and products. It warns that products accessible only through a search box might not be found through crawling.

Before creating “indoor planters,” “planters for indoors” and “indoor plant pots,” ask whether each would offer a meaningfully different selection or answer. If the products and purpose are almost identical, one clear collection may serve shoppers better. Record existing traffic and links before planning any consolidation. Keep separate collections when their distinction helps customers, such as planters with drainage versus decorative cover pots.

Choose priorities and measure the whole journey

Begin with a commercially important collection and a few products you can reliably supply. Favor pages where you can identify a concrete gap, such as unclear dimensions, a vague search title or no useful navigation link.

Record the pages, edits and dates. Review relevant search activity alongside store visits and purchases. If more people arrive but few continue to products, investigate the selection and collection experience. If shoppers inspect products without buying, examine the offer, specifications and purchase information.
