The short answer
You do not need to choose between SEO and AI search. Start with a useful, accessible website, then improve the answers and evidence your customers need.
- SEO and AI search share many of the same foundations.
- Clear service pages and useful answers deserve attention before more content.
- Measure qualified inquiries alongside search visibility and AI citations.
Help people find a relevant page.
Make your information easier to understand.
Start with the foundations they share
SEO helps search engines discover and understand your website. AEO, short for answer engine optimization, is commonly used to describe work intended to improve visibility in direct answers and AI search. The labels overlap. They do not require two disconnected websites or content strategies.
Google says the usual SEO practices remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Pages need to be indexed and eligible for a search snippet to appear as supporting links. There is no special AI schema or text file required, and meeting the requirements does not guarantee inclusion. Read Google’s guidance on AI features.
Our recommendation is to start with the problems a prospective customer would notice: a missing service page, unclear coverage, slow navigation or a broken inquiry form. Fixing those gives your search work somewhere useful to send people.
Make each service page earn its place
Choose one service that matters commercially and review its page as if you were a new customer. Could you understand what is offered without calling the business? Could you tell whether it serves your location and your type of project?
- Describe the service, the customer it suits and any important limits.
- Explain what happens after someone requests help.
- Include genuine project details, relevant qualifications and current contact information.
- Link to the page from relevant navigation and related content.
- Provide one clear next step, with a form that works on a phone.
Bing’s guidelines connect clear content, crawlable links and accurate site structure with both search and AI experiences. Its underlying discovery and indexing requirements still matter. Read the Bing Webmaster Guidelines.
Add answers your customers actually need
Once the service pages are useful, look for questions that keep appearing in calls, estimates and emails. People may need to understand the likely timeline, what affects the price, what preparation is required or when a different service would be more suitable.
Answer the question directly, then explain the conditions and exceptions. Add an example from your own work where you have permission. If a factual claim comes from another organization, name and link to the source. Avoid presenting an estimate as a universal price or an exceptional result as a typical outcome.
This approach reflects Google’s emphasis on original information, useful detail and clear evidence of experience. Its content guidance also discourages changing dates just to make an unchanged page look new. Read Google’s helpful content guidance.
A concise answer can make a page easier to use. It is not a formula that guarantees an AI citation.
What this could look like for an HVAC company
Consider a hypothetical HVAC company offering heat pump installation. Its existing page says it provides quality service, but does not explain its installation process or the homes it can help.
We would first improve that page with real service coverage, the assessment process, factors that affect installation time and a clear request form. Next, we might add a guide answering a question the team regularly hears: whether an existing home’s ductwork can be used.
The guide should explain that an assessment is needed, describe what the team checks and link to the installation service. A genuine project example could show the decision process without promising every home will receive the same recommendation.
That creates a useful path from an informational question to a service inquiry. We would assess its value through relevant visits and suitable inquiries, rather than treating a single appearance in an AI answer as proof of success.
Choose your first priorities
If time or budget is limited, use this order to decide what to work on next. It is a starting point for planning, not a promise of results within a particular period.
- Check access and measurement. Review important URLs in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Confirm that inquiry tracking works.
- Fix the customer journey. Test the main pages and forms on mobile. Remove unnecessary required fields and unclear instructions.
- Improve one important service page. Choose a service you can fulfill well and want more inquiries for.
- Publish one useful supporting answer. Use a real customer question and connect it to the relevant service.
- Review what happened. Record the changes and compare suitable inquiries as well as search activity.
If visitors already arrive but rarely contact you, prioritize clarity and the inquiry journey before commissioning another batch of articles.
Measure visibility and business outcomes separately
Google includes traffic from AI features within the Web search type in Search Console. Do not label all organic traffic as AI traffic. The same Google AI features guidance explains this reporting scope.
Bing Webmaster Tools offers AI Performance reporting for citations across supported Microsoft and partner experiences. Citation activity shows where content is referenced. It does not establish ranking, authority or a completed sale. Read Microsoft’s explanation of AI Performance.
Alongside those reports, track valid form submissions, relevant calls and which inquiries become suitable opportunities. A simple record of service requested, source when known and outcome can help. Allow for seasonality and other marketing changes before attributing a movement to one edit.
Repeatedly searching for your own business is a limited spot check. Keep those observations separate from reporting based on actual visitors and inquiries.
Invest in the next useful improvement
The best next step depends on your starting point. A new site may need stronger service pages. An established business may need more specific answers, clearer proof of its work or an easier contact journey.
When comparing proposals, ask what will change, why it matters to your customers and how the work will be evaluated. A useful plan should identify the pages, technical issues and content priorities involved. Be cautious about promises of guaranteed AI recommendations.
At Optiseo, we can review those priorities with you and connect website improvements with your SEO and AI search goals.
