The short answer

Relevant publicity can introduce your business to new customers and give readers a reason to visit your website. Its value depends on the audience, the accuracy of the story and what visitors find next. Coverage does not guarantee better rankings or an AI recommendation.

Start with something worth sharing

Digital PR means earning attention through useful stories, expertise or resources. For a US service business, that might be a local publication quoting a qualified team member, a trade association discussing a genuine project or a community organization reporting on work you contributed.

Choose a subject you can support with evidence. A clear explanation of a common customer problem is more useful than a claim that your business is the best. If you publish research, explain the sample, dates and method. Obtain permission before sharing customer details, photographs or results.

Google’s helpful content guidance emphasizes original information, useful detail and credible sourcing. Those are also sensible editorial checks before asking anyone to cover your work.

Judge an opportunity by the reader

Before spending time on a contribution or interview, check whether the publication reaches people who could benefit from your knowledge. A specialist outlet with a relevant audience may be more worthwhile than an unrelated website promising a large number of placements.

  • Topic fit: Does the publication regularly cover your industry or community?
  • Editorial quality: Are articles accurate, attributable and useful?
  • Business relevance: Could interested readers realistically use your service?
  • Transparency: Is this independent coverage, a paid advertisement or sponsorship?

Ask what work is included and what remains the publisher’s decision. Publication, wording and links cannot be assumed before an editor agrees. Treat estimated audience figures as estimates, not counts of people who saw your business.

A link should help someone find the resource or service discussed. Requesting a correction to a broken URL is reasonable. Buying links to manipulate rankings, demanding keyword rich anchor text or paying for undisclosed ranking credit creates a different problem.

Google’s link spam policy addresses links intended to manipulate rankings and explains how sponsored links should be qualified. The Bing Webmaster Guidelines also reject artificial link schemes. Neither policy makes a bulk link package a substitute for useful content.

An accurate mention without a link can still reach potential customers. Evaluate it as publicity rather than assigning an assumed SEO value.

Give interested readers a useful destination

Coverage can bring attention to a weak page just as easily as a strong one. Before promoting a resource, check that it loads well on a phone, explains the subject and offers an appropriate next step.

For example, a guide should connect to the service that helps solve the problem. The service page should explain availability, scope and how to request help. Optiseo’s website design and development work focuses on that customer journey alongside the site’s search foundations.

Hypothetical example: A roofing company publishes an illustrated guide to the observations homeowners can safely make from ground level after a storm. A local reporter uses its advice and names the qualified contributor. The guide links to a roof inspection page with accurate service coverage and a simple inquiry form. This creates a relevant path without inventing a ranking outcome or promising that the coverage will generate customers.

Measure what actually happened

Keep a record of published coverage, referral visits and suitable inquiries. Note the publication date and the page linked, if any. Check whether visitors reached the relevant service page and whether the team could respond to their requests.

Compare those observations with search performance, while allowing for seasonality, advertising and other website changes. A rise in branded searches does not establish that one article caused it.

Google says its usual SEO practices remain relevant to AI features, with no separate optimization requirement. Publicity is not a guaranteed route into those answers. See Google’s AI features guidance and our guide to where to start with SEO and AI search.
